Bollywood Movie Awards 2007

It was a star studded evening at the 2007 Bollywood Film Awards in New York this weekend. These awards honour the best artists, technicians and film-makers of contemporary Indian cinema every year.

The performances were not only glittery but entertaining as well. From the queen of item songs Bipasha Basu to the serious cinema gal Soha Ali Khan, all joined hands to set the stage on fire. Other sizzlers on the night were Pakistani singers Waris Baig and Shahida Mini along with Urmila Matondkar, Kangana Ranaut, Neha Dhupia, Arjun Rampal, Vivek Oberoi and Raghav.
The prominent awards winners were Bipasha Basu, best actress for her role in Corporate, Rajkumar Hirani, best director for his film Lage Raho Munnabhai, Kirron Kher, best supporting actress for her performance in Rang De Basanti.

Mira Nair received the Pride of India award and international actor Danny Glover was also honoured with an award.

For the debutants of the year, Kangana Ranaut was declared the best female debutant for the film Gangster and Upen Patel received the award for best male debutant for his film 36 China Town. Asha Parekh was honoured with the lifetime achievement award.

Here is something exclusive by the Bollywood sizzlers about their performances. Says Kangana, "I danced to a re-mix of songs from my films Gangster, Woh Lamhe and Metro. Except that these were male numbers. I've got them re-recorded into a female voice and danced on them!"

Bipasha Basu on the other hand is no stranger to New York. But dancing has come naturally to her in recent times. "It was Beedi jalay le and Namak isaq ka in Omkara which made me realize how much I enjoy filmy dances. I don't mind that. Nowadays I just love the outflow of energy when I go on stage."

Urmila Matondkar who's the most seasoned performer of the trio is also the most relaxed. She's the only one of the glam-trio who danced to her own songs. "I danced to a medley of my own songs including Bas Ek Pal."

Urmila Matondkar ..relaxed? She was far from it back stage. A group of dancers that performed that night were turned down for pictures with her. They all gathered around, they stood their waiting, then she just turned around and walked out the door. A mother of one of the dancers asked her again for a picture and she snapped at her saying " I am tired and I don't want to take any pictures, now go away and leave me alone" Yeah real relaxed she was. More like real rude.
