First Look: Basanti turns Ghungroo

Ram Gopal Varma's new take on Sholay turns the gaon ki gori Basanti into a Mumbaiya tapori called Ghungroo.

Here's an exclusive look at this character played by Nisha Kothari.

Bye Gabbar, Hi Ajgar!

Filmmaker Ramgopal Varma is riding the horns of a dilemma with his new movie.

The title of the movie has been jinxed right from the start. Varma ran into copyright issues when rather grandly he first decided to call it Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay. So the director settled on Ram Gopal Varma Ka Gabbar, next. Apparently, even that ran into trouble as Gabbar too was registered under the Copyright Act by the original makers of Sholay.

A Bollywood source said he may have to change the name of the main character in his movie to something like Ajgar Singh as the producers of Sholay have taken objections to the same. "It won't be a surprise if Varma's film is now called Ajgar Singh," said the source. "Although Sholay is considered to be a generic word, and there have been several films made in the past like Ramgarh Ke Sholay and Garhwali Sholay, it is unclear if the argument of copyright over the word holds true," added the source.

Varma has already changed the name of two important characters in his movie, Basanti and Thakur to Ghungroo and Narsimhan respectively. While the original Sholay had Basanti as the tangewali, Varma 's Ghungroo is an autorikshawali. Ramesh Sippy 's Sholay had Gabbar chopping off both the hands of Thakur Baldev Singh whereas Varma's film has Narsimhan (played by Mohanlal) losing both his wrists.

Varma, meanwhile, has always maintained that his is a tribute to Sholay and not a copy of the movie. Bollywood believes that it won't be a bad idea for the filmmaker to ultimately change the title to, say, Ram Gopal Varma ka Ajgar , because the movie has already generated enough curiosity even before its release!

Sanjay Dutt under extreme stress

The long court procedure and family disputes regarding the latest woman in Sanjay Dutt's life, have taken their toll on Sanjay's health.

A close friend reveals that a serious back problem has put Dutt into a state of acute pain. "Two of the bones in his vertebrae have collapsed suddenly. Sanju had to have them attended to immediately. But yes, Sanju feels stories about him buying a new Ferrari when the car has been in his garage for two years, aren't helping his cause. The news item had really stressed him out. We had to ask him to calm down.

The worst blow was when a section of the media wrote about another bomb accused getting a sentence of rigorous-imprisonment. Sanju felt these reports were unfairly comparing his case to the convicted man's case. He thought the media's implied contention that Sanju too should get just as harsh a sentence was too harsh on him. Sanju has suffered enough. And he needs to settle down in life."

Matters at home aren't making Dutt's life any easier. His family is sharply aligned against his lady- love Manyata. " Sanju can't bear to see his sisters upset. But he won't give up Manyata," says the friend.

Sushmita Sen is not doing DON 2

Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra will be doing an encore of their roles from Farhan 's Don.

However stories that Sushmita Sen has been approached for Don 2 are being dismissed as baseless.

The sequel is expected to be much more lavish and gorged with effects because of the new technologically oriented films, namely Dhoom 2 and Krissh, raising the bar and standards.

The budget and the locations for Don 2 will be far more spectacular than the first part. Dates for Shah Rukh and Priyanka have been finalised for early next year.

Bipasha to play herself in Pankh

After Bobby Deol playing himself in Nanhe, it's now Bipasha's turn to do the same. The sensuous actress is all set to act in a socially relevant film named Pankh.

The film which is directed by Sudipto Chattopadhyay is based on a true story of a child actor Ahsaas Channa, who has played key roles in films like Vaastu Shastra. Apparently Ahsaas, a girl by birth was passed of by her mother as a boy only to get her roles in television commercials. Ahsaas was also seen in Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

Director Sudipto will cast a newcomer Maraddona to play Ahsaas's character in the film.

But the real attraction in the movie is going to be Bipasha Basu who is thrilled about her role in the film. She plays a Bollywood actress whom the kid is completely smitten by.

First Look: Sushmita as Durga in Sholay

Shilpa to tie the knot?

Time and again, film industry circles have insisted that Shilpa Shetty and Anubhav Sinha, who directed her in the film Dus, are about to get married. Studio corridors are buzzing with the news of their impending marriage yet again.

Although both the actress and the director have denied the rumours vehemently, there has been no clarification from the director's wife Ratna, who is "uncontactable." Sources state that she has moved out of her husband's house in Andheri to New Delhi, with their six-year old son. A film industry source said that Shilpa Shetty and the director have made plans to tie the knot in February next year.

Interestingly, Shilpa, who last worked with Sinha in Dus, had decided not to work with the director again after rumours of their 'affair' surfaced. So she will not be seen in his next project, Cash, which was filmed mostly in Cape Town, South Africa. However, sister Shamita Shetty stars in the film in one of the leading roles.

Shilpa will be seen only in an item number in the film, which will be shot in Mumbai. The move, apparently, is to scotch rumours of an affair, which would have been fuelled further if the actress had flown to Cape Town for the shoot.

Hrithik escapes unhurt in Mercedes mishap

Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan's S-class Mercedes was badly dented on Sunday night due to a road accident near Panvel. The actor who was in the car and was on his way to Karjat for the shoot of Jodhaa Akbar escaped unhurt.

Reportedly there was a Zen ahead of Hrithik's car which wasn't giving way even after repeated honking from Hrithik's driver Sushil. After repeated attempts Hrithik's driver managed to overtake the Zen. After getting the lead the Mercedes slowed down a bit. Then suddenly the Zen car driver who was apparently drunk bumped into Hrithik's car. A Bolero which was traveling quite close to the Zen jammed hard but hit by a truck from behind it rammed into the Zen. Had the accident happened at a higher speed one can only imagine the consequences.

According to sources Hrithik even came out of his car and tried to confront the driver of the Zen. But seeing his drunken state he left the place. Despite the accident Hrithik went ahead to Karjat for the shoot of Jodhaa Akbar.

The Mercedes car in which Hrithik was traveling is only second of its kind in the whole of India. Karan Johar owning the other one. The Roshans car has been sent for repairs to the company.

Shilpa says cheers to Diet Vodka

Shilpa Shetty was in the Capital again, minus actor Richard Gere this time, but endorsing a brand some might consider very interesting – a diet vodka!

Now Shilpa doesn't drink, so what was the actress doing at the launch of India's first diet vodka brand in the Capital? “I am not much of a drinker but youngsters drink and physique is also important, so I endorse Romanov to them,” Shilpa said.

And from that ‘spirited’ chat, Shilpa moved on to the Hollywood front where things seem quite staid. “I am reading some scripts but nothing as yet,” the actress said. And that’s not all, Shilpa has also been giving her nose some pretty good exercise while hunting for her new branded fragrance. “I got a headache smelling 20 different scents. I had to sniff coffee in between but it’s very exciting and it’s called S-square,” Shilpa revealed.

Well, we'll be seeing S-square in her upcoming film Apne with the D-cube – that’s the Deol family trio. Till then the actress can ride on her new vodka high!

First Look: Meet Sholay's new Jai

Salman’s master stroke

Salman Khan knew the worth of his creation well when he pulled out his painting from an auction in a suburban hotel, recently. The painting that had earlier attracted only a paltry a sum of rupees 20 lakh, was sold at a whopping one crore, yesterday.

If you thought that the painting was sitting pretty at home you must hear this. Ramesh, an art lover, who had heard about Salman pulling a painting out of an auction, contacted Salman. Says a source, “The deal took place over the phone between Salman and Ramesh. He bought the painting for a crore yesterday.”

Sunaina Narula, chairman Plan India - a charitable organization, had told Mumbai Mirror in an earlier interview, “We were auctioning Salman's paintings and the bidding started from 10 lakhs and came up to 20 lakhs. However, Salman was not very happy about the price so he came up to the stage and stopped the auction. He said that it was a very precious painting as it speaks about the emotions between a mother and a son. He took the painting back and informed us that he had a figure in mind and once he got the price he would send the entire amount to Plan India.” Narula further informed, “It was Anil Kapoor who spoke to Salman and convinced him to bring his paintings for the auction.”

However, this time around the proceeds from the painting will go to the Salman Khan Foundation. Says a source close to the actor, “It was a good decision as Salman has fetched a bigger amount for the same painting. Moreover, the funds will be sent to the Salman Khan Foundation, which will now be richer by one crore.”

Salman's father Salim Khan confirmed this deal. He says, “Yes, Salman has sold the same painting, which he had pulled out earlier. Though I am not aware of the exact amount it has fetched, or, who it is sold to, I know for sure that the amount has gone to Salman Khan Foundation. The NGO organises charity shows. It will benefit the needy that the foundation supports.”

Mike Tyson shot music video for Fool n Final

Mike Tyson danced to Bollywood music for a promotional video for Fool n Final- a new Indian movie about a diamond heist - but he performed in Las Vegas, not India.

The former boxing champion had been expected to travel to India to film a dance sequence for the movie Fool n Final, but the scenes were shot in Las Vegas instead due to lack of a proper venue in India, director Ahmed Khan said.

"We could not find a suitable stadium in India to shoot with him,'' Khan said. "I was also worried about Mike's security so we decided to shoot in Las Vegas.'' The music video was shot over a two-day period with nearly 100 American performers, he said.

The comedy, set for a June release, features well-known actors Sunny Deol, Shahid Kapur, Vivek Oberoi, Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever, Ayesha Takia and Sameera Reddy. In the slapstick film, two diamond-thirsty gangs clash over the loot while it is being shipped from the Middle East to India.

Neha Dhupia’s first ever cabaret act!

Think of an actor from Bollywood performing a Cabaret dance so sensuous that it could take you off your feet.

It's a task that few achieve. However, many have been trying over the years to make an attempt to come at least half as close to the beauty and grace of Helen. The latest one who's seen trying her luck is Neha Dhupia who performs a cabaret sequence in Saurabh Shukla's upcoming film I M 24.

After missing the last train in Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and struggling with the existence of being a cop's wife, she seems to be looking up to this film. The film will see Neha going for a Cabaret dance, the first time ever in her career. Starring opposite Neha is Ranveer Shourie, rather known for his unconventional and off beat association of roles.

While Ranveer also plays a wannabe actor in the movie caught in a 'tit for tat' game with Neha, director Saurabh Shukla himself features in the movie as a rich producer. Also, in special appearance will be Lilette Dubey playing the role of a Saurabh's catty witty girlfriend, a role that she could pull off perhaps the best.

I M 24 is being talked about as a light-hearted romantic comedy shot merely in a span of 22 days! So hopefully, we would expect the movie to stay in theatres for at least half that time!

John puffs up to say No Smoking

No Smoking - that’s actor John Abraham's message to the world, a message he claims to believe in, and it also helps if it’s the title of his next film.

So John
, along with director Anurag Kashyap and model-turned-actor Milind Soman joined hands with the Cancer Patients Aid Association to spread awareness about the harmful effects of Tobacco.

No Smoking is the title of Anurag Kashyap's next directorial venture starring John Abraham - a film they say would inspire smokers to give up the puff.

On the flip side, however, John had to puff his way through the film, all for spreading the message of no smoking of course!

Sanjay Dutt gets himself a Ferrari!

Even though the agonising wait for his sentence continues to drag at a snail's pace, Sanjay Dutt seems to be rather optimistic of his ultimate fate and has decided to live life in the fast lane for the time being... literally!

According to sources, Dutt has allegedly got himself a swanky set of wheels - a Ferrari F430 - that he had ordered earlier. The F430 is an eight-cylinder model and costs approximately $168005-$227000 (between Rs 68 to Rs 92 lakhs). On a previous occasion, Dutt had said that his dream car was a Ferrari and it sure looks like his dream has finally come true.

"The car is red in colour and it was in storage at a showroom in Mahalaxmi for a few days. It was delivered to Dutt yesterday," says a source. Despite repeated attempts to get in touch with the deadly Dutt, he was unavailable for comment.

Will the new Ferrari prove to be a lucky talisman? Or a dream ride into freedom? What say Mr Dutt?

Rahul Bose to make film on illicit affairs

Bollywood actor Rahul Bose will direct a film next year based on a novel - Moth Smoke written by Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid - about an extra-marital affair in contemporary Pakistan.

Shah Rukh Khan endorses alcohol

Renowned liquor company Diageo Radico has roped Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan as their brand ambassador for their newly launched Masterstroke deluxe whisky in Mumbai.

He doesn't drink but that doesn't stop superstar Shah Rukh Khan from endorsing alcohol. Well, we guess that's what it takes to be a good actor.

At the launch party, SRK, in his inimitable style began the evening by saying "Kaun kambakht jeene ke liye pita hain… (Who says we drink to live)."

But when Shah Rukh Khan launches something he does it in style and with a lot of thought.

It will be interesting to see if the Baadshah takes this endorsement to dizzying heights!

Priyanka Chopra in Saroj Khan's Sati

Her film is titled as Sati...a burning desire to love. The film stars one of the leading ladies of Bollywood, Priyanka Chopra as a main protagonist. The other star cast of the film is yet to be finalized.

However, there was a speculation that the movie will star her favourite actress Madhuri Dixit. But now Saroj Khan has cleared all speculation that Sati is not meant for Madhuri rather she does not deserve the role.

Saroj Khan made her directorial debut with a Bhojpuri film called Dil Diwana Tohar Gayil. Sati will be her second film as a director. The film's script has been written by Makrand Deshpande.

The film is slated to go on floor later in the year.

SON SUPPORT: Abhishek accompanied his father Amitabh on his big day at Cheeni Kum premiere.
It was superstar Amitabh Bachchan's big day at the premiere of his new film Cheeni Kum and accompanying him was son Abhishek, in his first public appearance post honeymoon.

Although neither father nor son spoke to the press, they did make it a point to show their affection for the director, R Balakrishnan.

As for Tabu, she still can't stop raving about the mutual admiration society that she and Amitabh Bachchan formed during shooting for the film. "I think that the ponytail looks very cool and his acting is beyond comparison," said Tabu.

"His (Amitabh Bachchan) look is very cool. And I wanted to see what Balakrishnan has done," said filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.

Although some other Bollywood faces did attend, this premiere of a small film with a large star cast stayed a quiet event.

Aamir Khan's Lajjo shelved!

After gathering dust for the longest time, Mani Ratnam's ambitious film, Lajjo, has been scrapped.

The problem started with Kareena opting out and Aamir getting busy with his other films including his directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par. However, producer Bobby Bedi has been citing other reasons for the oh-so-long delay. A source close to Ratnam says, "The film is definitely not happening. Even the actors have got busy with other projects."

Mani Ratnam is extremely unhappy about the fate of the film. Sources indicate that Aamir Khan wasn't too happy with the final script. This led Khan to work on his home production, Taare Zameen Par followed by Kajri, the Hindi remake of Tamil super hit Ghajini. "There were major differences on the script and other aspects. As a result the film never got started," adds a reliable source.

Producer Bobby Bedi had earlier revealed that Mani Ratnam was busy with Guru so the film never hit the floors in December. But Bedi maintains, "The film has not been shelved and we are going to shoot the film at some point." However, the sources confirm that the film has been done away with.

Amitabh Bachchan goes shopping for charity

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan took time out to volunteer and browse around an Oxfam shop (London) in support of the international aid agency, which is a charity partner to this year’s International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA).

Bachchan, who is the ambassador of the IIFA, helped at the Oxfam shop in Westbourne Grove, London, to launch a series of Oxfam fringe events in the lead up to the prestigious awards weekend in Yorkshire on June 7-9.

Bachchan said it was an honour to help Oxfam because it fights poverty and suffering in more than 70 countries, including India.

“Many people in India have benefited from Oxfam’s projects so it was important for me to see some of the fundraising efforts in the UK and meet some of the volunteers who give up their time to support Oxfam’s life-saving work,” Bachchan said.

More than 100 shops are taking on a Bollywood theme in the lead up to IIFA Awards ceremony.

Oxfam campaigners and volunteers will be taking part in fringe events in Yorkshire and shops will have Bollywood-themed window displays with South Asian clothing on sale.
