Soha speaks her mind

Its been ages since we last saw Soha Ali Khan in Rakeysh Mehra's Rang De Basanti and Shivam Nair's Ahista Ahista.

Here's the latest interview she gave to TOI's Mandvi Sharma in which she talks about what makes her tick.

"I've some good films in hand, and my work is being appreciated. So, I'm happy!" she says. Soha has always been her own person, and this was more than evident after she went to England to study and stayed on her own.

"That's when I really got to know the person I was, besides learning what I really wanted out of life. But, I am still discovering myself. Sometimes, what you are is quite contradictory to what you turn out to be," she shares.

And what does she like to indulge in?

"Everything that is ready-to-eat because I am a great fan of comfort. Right now, my favorite food is broccoli and frozen yogurt. You'll always find that in my fridge," she smiles. Oh, frozen yogurt even after all that cough and cold? Some addiction!

"Yes, I guess, that's why the medicines have not been working," she laughs, adding that she has this ability to laugh at herself when she does something foolish. "More than doing something foolish, even if I have done something wrong, I'd rather accept it and correct myself."

Soha has been asked a lot of questions about big brother's personal life: Amrita-Saif, Rozza-Saif, and now, Kareena-Saif.

"I've always been asked these questions even though I'm not comfortable answering them. But I know, I'll have to give some answer even if it's a 'No comments'. However, I've always maintained that every person will answer for himself or herself, so I'll answer only for myself.

Even when questions are asked about my ex sister-in-law, I totally understand and so does she. She's also from the industry and knows how things work here," she says.

Ask her about her friendship with her Rang De Basanti co-star Siddharth, and she says matter-of-factly, " Sid and I, together with another friend, had gone to the premiere of Saawariya. Just because this friend is not from the industry, I knew that Sid and I would be written about. But that's ok with me."

Sharmila Tagore is in for a surprise!

"I am picking up something up for Amma for Mother's Day," says Soha. "Because I hope to please her on her special day," she smiles.

Soha wandered through the Lacoste boutique in delhi city, checking out the recently launched Spring Summer 2007 collection and range of footwear. "I'm here because Lacoste is smart, international and has classic cuts and styles. They have a certain timeless appeal. Amma is always elegant. She likes to be comfy, especially during summer. She leads an active life and wants to feel good. Lacoste's range would certainly appeal to my mother's tastes," says the petite star.

And what did she hope to find for her mother here? "Mom goes to the gym, is quite athletic, likes cottons and natural clothes. She prefers elegant, but comfy clothing and her dressing style is understated. My mom is true to herself. She understands her body type and dresses accordingly. I think Lacoste has some sporty stuff I can pick for her," says Soha.

And what are her mom's fave colours? "Mom likes pastels and she can carry them off very well. She goes for shades like olive green, pink and blue. Hmmm... maybe I'll pick an orange to make things a bit peppier," she says.

Is it a surprise gift? "Mom is in Mumbai on Mother's Day. I didn't give her anything last year, so this is going to be a surprise," she grins mischievously.

Isn't she tempted to shop for herself as well? "I'm not much of a shopper. But now that I'm here and there is so much variety, I'll buy something for myself too. Lacoste is an enduring international brand and it will be difficult not to shop for the rest of my family... my dad, bro and sis too. I discovered there are socks here and maybe will pick up some for dad," says Soha, her eyes travelling to the men's range.

So, thanks to mama Sharmila, everybody is getting a gift this Mother's Day!

Sudhir Mishra to direct short film with Soha

Sudhir Mishra is all set to direct a 10 minute short film featuring Soha Ali Khan and the ‘tsunami boy’ from Traffic Signal.

The film which is titled The Ball is a part of a series of 10 short films and is inspired from a real life story that took place in Mumbai. Reportedly, the story is based on a road accident in which Soha’s brother in the film gets killed. The nine remaining films also revolve around the city of Mumbai.

The film is produced by Whitecloud Pictures and presented by Sahara Motion Pictures. The 10 films are likely to be ready by August and will get a festival opening before they are released in the theatres.

Soha Ali takes up the Challenge

According to Sowmya from Bollywood News & Gossip, you have only her ‘girl next door’ look in your mind after RDB and Ahista. But this girl is now to prove her mettle with Sudhir Mishra’s “Khoya Khoya Chand”. According to Mishra, Soha plays an actress whose career graph has had many highs and lows. “Soha finds herself in the wild world of cinema. Those days, filmmakers put their lives on the line. When Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt made films, they mortgaged their studios. Cinema was all that they had. There was no other source of income like today. That precisely attracted me to make KKC.”

Pointing this is unarguably her most challenging role till date, Soha recounts she had jumped at Sudhir’s offer. “But my mother (Sharmila Tagore) was worried; she wondered how I would play such a complex role because I am young and I have had a much-protected upbringing. She told me that it was a role which most heroines have not done in their lives. She ensured that I looked convincing in the film. She gave me some of her own saris, which made my look even more authentic. Moreover, we did a lot of research. Niharika who was in charge of my look even had long discussions with my mother. Add this to the fact that I saw a spate of films from the ’50s and ’60s.” She has scenes where she does ‘Mujra’ and also a ‘Club dance’. Hope she really convinces her audience that she can carry off any role with ease.

Abhay - Soha together again in 'Meridian'

After pairing up in 'Ahista Ahista', Abhay Deol and Soha Ali Khan would be seen together again in a film titled 'Meridian'.

An ensemble piece that also stars Arjun Rampal and Irrfan Khan, the film is written and directed by debutant Venod Mitra and produced by Nilesh Dadhich and Angad Paul. As per Abhay, the film belongs to a completely different genre than his two released films 'Socha Na Tha' and 'Ahista Ahista'. Also viewers would be seeing him and Soha in a different light than 'Ahista Ahista'.

Though debutant Shivam Nair directed 'Ahista Ahista' was a well made film with some genuinely touching moments and very good music by Himesh Resahmmiya, it was a disaster at the box office due to poor promotion and bad release strategy. With 'Meridian', Abhay and Soha would be hoping that they the film is promoted and released well and their work is appreciated by the audience.
